Martha’s Vineyard

The island playground of celebrities

Martha’s Vineyard is a popular destination for tourists, in large part because of the beautiful beaches and the weather — during the summer, the temperature is almost always below 90 degrees. Often called simply “the Vineyard”, it’s a place for relaxation, perhaps golfing, fishing, and enjoying the sun on the beach, often finding yourself in the company of celebrities and the wealthy, who come there to summer.

With six towns and 15,000 year-round residents, the summer season brings a hundred thousand temporary residents and short-term visitors.

Popular attractions include Oak Bluffs’ Grand Illumination, the many events by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Society at the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center including the the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, the Farm Institute at Katama Farm in Edgartown, and the renowned the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs.

If you leave your car behind on the mainland, yellow busses circle the island in the summer for the convenience of visitors.
